Our INSERM unit U888 works towards a better understanding of the underlying biological and environmental causes of neuropsychiatric disorders and their treatment. The studies conducted by the unit combine epidemiological (general population-based) and clinical (hospital-based) research methods. In collaboration with researchers from the University of Montpellier I and the Institute of Psychiatry, London, we undertake research in dementia, sleep disorders, depression, suicidal behaviour, anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and evaluation of mental health care. Our Unit, which today includes over 40 researchers and technical staff, is based at the La Colombière Psychiatric Hospital in Montpellier. The research staff includes statutory INSERM research fellows and directors, and clinicians from the university departments of Psychiatry, Neurology, Neuroradiology and Biochemistry. The unit is part of a regional research network (IFR3), collaborating also with the Montpellier Institute of Neurosciences and the University Department of Public Health. In 2007 the unit became a European Associated Laboratory in association with the Department of Epidemiology, Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College, London. |

* DOf the ten most burdensome diseases in the world in 2020, five will be psychiatric disorders – with depression the number one disease world-wide for women. These are the findings of a study conducted jointly by the University of Harvard and the World Bank. Population studies tell us that in the course of a year 15-20% of the population will suffer from a mental illness, be they children, adolescents or adults. Compared to other European countries, mental health in France is relatively poor (in a comparison of 11 countries France rates 9th in terms of good psychological health and 3rd for psychological distress). Rates of depression and anxiety are particularly high, such that France is classed in last position for overall psychological well-being. |
